Core functions of academy governors
Setting strategic direction: Governors work with the headteacher and school leadership to set the school's vision, ethos, and strategic aims for improvement.
Holding leadership accountable: They hold the headteacher accountable for the educational performance of the academy and its pupils, and for the performance management of staff.
Develop school policy: They approve school policies, such as those related to curriculum, staffing, and safeguarding, to ensure they align with the academy's aims and objectives.
Monitor progress: They evaluate the academy's effectiveness by analysing key performance data and conducting academy visits to see plans in action.
Recruit senior leaders: As required, they are involved in the recruitment and appointment of the Headteacher and other senior staff.
Engage with the community: They act as a link between the academy and its stakeholders, including parents, staff, and the wider community.
Delegation in multi academy trusts
For academies that are part of a MAT, the level of responsibility delegated to the local governing body can vary significantly. The trust's Board of Trustees has ultimate accountability and may retain control over major functions like finance and admissions. The MAT's "scheme of delegation" outlines which powers are handled by the central trust and which are given to the local governors
